You can turn your kitchen into a functional masterpiece by using your imagination along with some frugal shopping.  Remodeling your kitchen does not have to cost a fortune. You can save money by doing some of the work yourself or using refurbished items.

Ways to Save on Your Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen is one of the most expensive spaces to remodel in a home. There are ways to cut costs and still have a kitchen that is functional and beautiful.

The biggest cost in a kitchen remodel are new cabinets.  Custom cabinets are the most expensive because they are designed and installed to specifically fit your space.  If you need new cabinets, but cannot afford custom cabinets, buying ready-to-assemble cabinets is another option.

Ready-to-assemble cabinets or semi-custom cabinets are prefabricated off-site in standard sizes.  Options are limited in terms of sizing, styles, materials, and finishes.  Going the RTA route can be half the cost of custom cabinets depending on the material and cost of installation.

You can also opt to not even replace the cabinets. You can change the look in other ways, for example:

  • Add New Hardware.
If your cabinets are in decent shape, adding new hardware, like hinges and handles, can improve the look of your kitchen for much less. You can find complete hardware sets online, at home improvement stores, or local resale shops.
  • Resurface Existing Cabinets.
You can remodel your kitchen by simply giving your cabinets a facelift. Color can transform your kitchen for just a few hundred bucks.  Resurfacing and painting is a cost-effective solution to a kitchen remodel.
  • Remove the Doors.
Choose open shelving for your kitchen remodel by removing the doors entirely. This option can save thousands of dollars and is very functional.

Granite is one of the most popular choices for countertops. If granite does not fit into your kitchen remodeling budget, there are other alternatives to choose from. Stone, concrete, tile, laminate, slate, and recycled glass are just a few of the materials available.

  • Mix Countertop Materials.
If you are determined to have the granite or marble countertop, then consider using another material with it to save money.  Incorporate the more expensive material in a few sections of the countertop and use laminate for the rest of the surface.
  • Options for Islands
Look at different options for islands. Repurposing a piece of furniture like a table or dresser can bring uniqueness into your kitchen.  Search for items at estate sales, garage sales, or salvage stores.  You can also convert a table or an old cart into a mobile kitchen island by adding castors.

Even if you’re replacing all the appliances, there are ways to save.

  • Stay with Existing Layout.
The mechanicals and electrical connections for appliances can be costly if you replace the existing ones with ones that are larger or function differently.  For example, if you replace an electric stove with a gas one, you’ll need to install the proper gas connection. If you work with the layout that you already have, you’ll save money and time.
  • Buy Discounted Appliances.
Many stores will offer discounts on floor models or dented appliances. They are still fully functional and will save you hundreds of dollars. You could fix the damage yourself if it is minor. If there are scratches or dents in areas that won’t be seen, why bother? Discontinued models are another less expensive option for your kitchen remodel. Lowe’s and Home Depot have an online rebate center for some of their kitchen appliances. You can also check outlet stores or wait for year-end closeout sales.

There are ways to keep kitchen remodeling costs down.

  • Install Track Lighting instead of Recessed Lighting.
You can choose from a variety of styles, shapes, and finishes.  With track lighting, there will be no need to cut into the ceiling or hire an electrician, as you would with recessed lighting.
  • Use DIY Kits.
Another easy and affordable lighting option is a lighting conversion kit. Lighting kits are easy to install, and you don’t need an electrician. Some brands even have instructional YouTube videos to assist you.

Layout and Design

An open floor plan is what many homeowners desire for the layout in their homes. Knocking down a wall affects many other components in the home and can be expensive. A cost-effective option is to consider a cut-out.

A cut-out will not only save money, but it will give you peace of mind knowing the floor and ceiling won’t have to be repaired. On the other hand, if you love the current layout of your kitchen, then leave it alone and save even more.
