5 Tips for Designing a Nursery

Whether you’re expecting your first child or you’re on baby number three, you will need a designated space for the extra family member. Decorating a nursery is an exciting project. All you need is a little creativity to make the perfect space for your baby. Knowing how to utilize the space you have will make decorating that much easier.

Create a Room You and Your Baby Will Love

nursery design

A baby nursery is a big expense of having a baby. Both you and your baby will be spending lots of time in this room, so choose the decor wisely. Make sure it is as comfortable as possible. Nursery color schemes, themes, furniture, and storage are major considerations to begin planning your nursery.

1. Choose Your Space

It’s expected that nurseries will be a separate bedroom that has ample room for a crib, dresser, storage, and toys.  This is not always the case. Consider adding a room to your home or converting existing space if you don’t have any room for a nursery. If you are planning to have children later on, you may want to start making plans for a room addition now.

Depending on the size of your home, some new moms may have to share their bedroom or use a closet, at least temporarily.  All that is needed is a bassinet and portable changing station. You can set off the nursery space with a divider. If your space is too small to accommodate a divider, use color instead to designate the baby’s space.

2. Color Scheme and Themes

Once you’ve determined where you’re going to put your baby, settle on the colors for your baby’s space. Will you want bright colors or neutral colors in the room? Do you want jungle-themed or fairytale-themed décor?

If you don’t want to paint the entire room or just want a pop of color, consider an accent wall. Incorporate patterned wallpaper, easy-to-remove decals, a mural, or bright paint color. You can add some color to the ceiling as well. The ceiling is what the baby will be looking at the most while in bed. Stick-on decals like stars or flowers or an eye-catching wallpaper that goes with the theme of the room will attract the baby’s attention.

3. Furniture

Baby furniture choices should be based on functionality and comfort.  Cribs are essential furniture pieces that come in many different colors and added features. White, gray, pink, brown, and cream are common colors. Some cribs come with storage, drawers, and attached changing tables.

Since you’ll be getting up frequently during the nights for a while, you want to be comfortable. A glider, recliner, or comfy chair with an ottoman to rest your feet will be helpful for feedings and soothing your infant.  Other useful furniture and decor for a nursery can include a table, dresser, and area rug.

If you’re on a budget, try shopping at thrift and vintage stores. Vintage furniture can create an elegant and unique look for a baby’s room, often at a fraction of the price. Garage sales and online marketing sites are good sources for used baby items too. Don’t be shy about asking friends and family if they have baby items they’re no longer using.

4. Storage

Storage baskets are both a functional and decorative addition to any baby room. Baby storage baskets and bins can help you keep your tiny nursery tidy and organized. These containers are great for storing diapers, toys, books, clothes, blankets, towels, and more.

If you don’t use clear storage containers, be sure to use labels so you can find items you need quickly.

Utilizing wall space for additional baby room storage is a great option if you don’t want to take up floor space. Try adding multi-level shelving by the changing table to store diapers and wipes. Or add floating shelves by the crib to store blankets and toys.

5. Lighting

Pay attention to the lighting in the room. Natural light is a must for a nursery. For daytime naps, you’ll need to darken the room. Consider blackout curtains or blinds for the window coverings.

Unique light fixtures are a great nursery design idea. Consider chandeliers, pendant lights, sconces, or even table lamps in your nursery.  Make sure you install a dimmer switch so you can adjust the brightness for your baby.

Not Enough Space for Your New Baby?

If you have a bundle of joy on the way or want to plan early before you start a family, consider a room addition. Adding a nursery away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home allows for a unique space to nurture your baby during those first years.

9 Ways to Save Money on Your Bathroom Remodel

Most of us begin and end our day in the bathroom.  A cluttered, unattractive bathroom doesn't exactly invigorate you to take on the day's challenges. An updated and organized bathroom with features you love will help you feel more satisfied.

When homeowners think about bathroom remodeling, the cost is the first thing that comes to mind. That is because kitchens and bathrooms are well-known to be the two most expensive rooms to remodel. However, your bathroom renovation doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.

How to Not Go Broke Remodeling Your Bathroom

Don’t be discouraged at the thought that a bathroom remodel might be outside of your budget. Instead of letting go of your dream spa, use these tips for a less expensive, but beautiful bathroom remodel.  Here are a few money-saving tips to help you get your bathroom remodel done on a budget.

1. Develop a Budget and Plan

The best way to save money on a bathroom remodel is to develop a detailed budget and stick to it. If you know how much money you have to spend on the project, then you’ll know how much you can devote to various aspects of the upgrade.

Use your budget to develop your plan.  Go over each detail and itemize everything, such as tile work, a new vanity, paint, and decor. This will ensure you won’t have any surprises when it comes to cost or the finished project.

2. Upgrade with Paint

Painting is one of the least expensive parts of a bathroom remodel. A new coat has the power to completely remake the look and feel of a bathroom.  You can choose vibrant pops of color for a fresh, bright look. For a more neutral and relaxed tone, gray or shades of beige always work.

3. Go for Shelving

Cabinetry can be one of the more expensive portions of a bathroom upgrade. If you want lots of storage, shelving is a nice alternative that will give you the same storage, but for far less money. Consider wall-mounted shelves behind the toilet or floor-standing units for free walls.

In addition to providing the storage space you need, shelving offers decorative options. Store necessities including toilet paper and towels in pretty decorative boxes or use some of the shelves to display items such as vases and pottery.

4. Toilet Updates

If there is nothing wrong with your existing toilet, instead of replacing, consider swapping out the toilet’s lid and seat. You’ll be surprised by how this simple fix makes your toilet look like new again.

5. Don’t Move Plumbing

Moving plumbing is where the real expense occurs. To move a shower, toilet, or sink, you’ll need a professional to complete the job. Your bathroom will be totally out of service for a few days.

To move pipes, you usually will have to get inside the flooring and walls. Keep remodeling costs low by leaving your toilet, vanity, and shower where they already are. You’ll save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on your upgrade.

6. Frame Mirrors

You can add an element of classiness for a small price if you frame your mirror. Not only does a frame hide age-related wear, it also makes your entire bathroom look updated.

7. Add A Spa-Like Update

You can get the feel and look of a spa with a simple change in the showerhead. A rain or massage showerhead will give you luxury for a relatively small price.

8. Renovate Your Tub

If your bathtub is structurally fine but just needs a facelift, look into resurfacing the tub. Resurfacing can change the color of your tub and make it look brand new. This should be done by a professional.

If your tub is a little dinged up and you want a new surface to it, you can order a custom bath liner that will fit snugly over your existing tub.

9. Implement Small, Yet Impactful Fixes

Small changes in a bathroom remodel can go a long way. New lighting and accents may be all your bathroom needs. You can change out fixtures such as door handles, faucets, drawer pulls, or light fixtures to give your bath an updated feel. Crown molding can be added to your bathroom to make the room feel taller and more elegant.

Popular Bathroom Design Ideas

The bathroom in any home is one of the most used spaces beside the kitchen. Whether it’s used to get ready for the day or to unwind before bed, bathrooms should add a sense of relaxation and comfort to daily routines. If a bathroom is lacking in storage, amenities, or personality, changes must be made. Finnteriors can help make remodeling dreams become a reality.

Everyone loves a bright and functional bathroom. Here are a few popular bathroom remodeling options to implement to make it one of a kind.

1. Add a Pop of Color. Color can be injected into a bathroom through the accessories used. A bold color such as red or blue adds personality and energy to the space. A red soap dispenser, patterned rug, or a blue bathtub are simple ways to add color and a new feel to this often-used space.

2. Large Bathtubs/Open Showers. Homeowners today love to wind down after a long day in a large bathtub. The bigger the bathtub, the better opportunity for relaxation. Jacuzzi-style tubs aren’t as popular as they used to be due to the bathroom remodeling trend of adding larger bathtubs.

Open showers appear to visually increase the size of a bathroom, while also making it roomier. While some may find an open shower design has a lack of privacy, others enjoy the accessible openness and increased shower space.

3. Proper Ventilation. Bathroom ventilation does not add storage or make the room feel bigger, but it does make a bathroom feel better. Adequate ventilation should be installed in newly remodeled bathrooms. Unfortunately, many homeowners neglect this important aspect. Ventilation in a bathroom helps reduce humidity and prevents the buildup of mold and mildew.

Investing in a top-quality exhaust fan ensures better indoor air quality. Most bathroom ventilation fans are installed on the ceiling to draw steamy air out of the bathroom. Opt for a recessed ventilation fan to keep the ceiling looking sleek and uncluttered.

4. Gold and Brass Fixtures. Warmer tones can be implemented with accent pieces in a bathroom. Gold and brass fixtures add a traditional element to bathrooms and offer another option than the heavily used polished chrome fixtures. Cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and mirrors in gold or brass complement a bathroom perfectly.

New finish options for gold and brass fixtures include satin and matte. Gold and brass accents also pair well with off-white and blue colors. They look amazing in many different style settings.

5. A Floating Vanity. Need to make the bathroom appear larger? A creative way to enlarge a bathroom is by installing a bathroom counter that appears to float. The open space below the cabinets allows for more light to move through the bathroom, thus creating the illusion of more space. This design element works well in a clean, modern and sleek bathroom remodel.

6. Unique Tile Patterns. Technology has ushered in a variety of tile options to make any bathroom stand out. From different shapes and patterns such as hexagon, diamond, and chevron, there is something for every design style. These patterns and shapes can also be used as bathroom backsplashes on the shower wall.

7. Compact Storage. Cabinets, shelves, and storage areas help keep households organized. Gone are the days of overcrammed and messy cabinets. This lifestyle is believed to help relieve stress. The bathroom should be a sanctuary and compact storage can effectively provide just that. Hidden cabinets, modern wall shelving, and storage space under the vanity will make the bathroom appear less cluttered, allowing the entire space to feel more open.

This Year’s Top 7 Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Bathrooms are one of the most used rooms in every home. If your bathroom looks outdated it’s time for a much-needed upgrade. In 2020, bathroom remodels will focus on being more functionally equipped and well-integrated.

bathroom remodeling ideas

There are several reasons to remodel a bathroom. Is the decor still the same since you’ve moved into your home? Have circumstances changed in your family, or are you just bored with the way it looks? Maybe you want to save on the monthly water bill or have serious plumbing issues that need to be fixed. All these are great reasons to remodel.

A bathroom remodel should incorporate functionality and designs that you love. Of course, we can’t forget about the budget. Depending on how much you want to spend will ultimately determine the features and fixtures that can be included.

You also want it to be something that will age well. Nobody wants a space that will look dated within a few years. This isn’t good for resale value or your budget. Bathroom remodels should include elements that are not only popular today, but will continue that trend in the future.

Bathroom Design Trends

Most homeowners spend just as much time in the bathroom as they do the bedroom or kitchen.  It is a personal space that should fit the tasks and needs of everyone occupying that shared area. Besides color, other designs and features to help transform an old bathroom into a sanctuary include the following.

  • 1. Biophilic Design

If you want your bathroom to resemble a spa, consider a biophilic design that incorporates elements of nature into the decor. Being connected to nature helps reduce stress, enhance creativity, and improve well-being. This type of design includes natural materials and light.  Touches of greenery, stone veneers, bamboo wall panels, and neutral paint tones can be added to give a spa-like feel.

Wallcoverings that help create a natural setting would work well in a biophilic themed bathroom. Devices can be used to bring natural sounds into this personal space, creating your therapeutic retreat.

  • 2. Open Showers

Remove the glass doors and opt for an open shower.  You will have less cleaning to do and many design options to choose from. Your bathroom remodel can include a corridor-style shower where two walls are facing each other with an opening on both sides. Or it can be an enclosure-style with three walls.

  • 3. Freestanding Bathtubs

Changing the bathtub is a good way to modify the feel and style of your bathroom. Freestanding tubs are designed without any attachment to the floor or walls. They give bathrooms a spacious and luxurious feel. Materials used in freestanding tubs include:
  • Fiberglass
  • Acrylic
  • Ceramic Tile
  • Cast Iron
  • Porcelain on Steel
  • Natural Stone
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Wood
Bathtub with a Towel
  • 4. Console Style Vanities

For small bathrooms that do not have much space, a console vanity or sink would work well. A console-style vanity is open at the bottom, exposing the walls. They are a combination of a sink and a table. The legs, sink, and counter space is slim. You can add storage bins or baskets underneath the sink.

  • 5. Integrated Lighting

Bathroom lighting is essential to creating a functional space. There are special lighting features that can be added to a bathroom. For a spa-like feel, consider integrating lighting in a whirlpool. If wall space is at a minimum, add lighting to the medicine cabinet or mirrors.
Processed with VSCO with fr4 preset
  • 6. Metallic Accents

Metallics provides texture and brightens up a dark bathroom. They come in two categories, warm and cool. Brass, gold, copper, and bronze are warm metallics, while silver and platinum are cool. They can be used on cabinet doors, drawer pulls, faucets, and showerheads.

Silver accents pair well with whites and bold colors. Gold and brass accents complement blue and black pieces. Copper fits in with industrial decor. Adding brass accents with an unpolished finish looks great in a bathroom.
  • 7. Technology

The use of technology in homes has increased tremendously. Smart technology can be integrated into bathrooms to help conserve water and energy. Some cool innovations include:

    • Smart Toilets: self-cleaning, integrated bidet,
    • Showers: electronic controls, timed shower setting, control temperature,
    • Voice-Activated Lighting: use of smart light bulbs along with Echo
    • Sinks: touchless, digital temperature-control settings
    • Cabinets: warming drawers, refrigerated cabinets

11 Budget-Friendly Ways to Remodel Your Bathroom

bathroom remodel st louis

When homeowners think about remodeling their bathrooms, many think that it takes a ton of money to implement creative ideas. While some remodeling can be expensive, there are ways to get a genuinely inspired bathroom within a limited budget.  It may not seem possible, but an inexpensive bathroom remodel is attainable.

A low-cost bathroom remodel can produce an attractive and functional bathroom. Plus, you will have considerably more money in your bank account than homeowners who went the more expensive route.

Creating a Plan

It’s important to have a plan and budget in place before the remodeling begins. Answers to the following questions will help you decide what needs to be changed or upgraded in your bathroom as well as the type of items to buy to make those changes.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

install a modern showerhead

Here are some ways to modernize your bathroom and make it more functional without shelling out a lot of cash.

  1. Install a Modern Showerhead

Installing a showerhead that controls the volume of water as well as the temperature or a hand-held shower head is an added comfort and convenience. You can also choose showerheads that are low-flow showerheads that can decrease utility bills.

  2. Re-Paint the Bathroom

Repainting is the most cost-effective way to give your bathroom a new look.

When choosing the type of paint consider the moisture in your bathroom. Since mold and mildew develop easily in a bathroom, and humidity and temperatures change often, it’s a good idea to invest in a mold-resistant paint.

  3. Update Fixtures

You can update light fixtures, sink and bathtub faucets, towel racks, and drawer pulls for a relatively small investment. These items may seem insignificant but updating them can make a big difference in the aesthetic look of your bathroom.

  4. Resurface the Tub

You can refurbish your current tub or shower instead of replacing it. Having it professionally refinished is much cheaper.  You can also opt to have it professionally relined, which is also less expensive.

  5. Add Bead-Board Wainscot

Modernize your bathroom with bead-board wainscot. You may choose to wainscot part of the walls or their full length. Installing this will protect your walls from spills and give your space a fresh look. This board can be painted any color that you desire. Interior latex paint works well on this material.

  6. Frame Your Mirrors

Does your bathroom have a factory-grade mirror? You can make it look more unique by framing it. This project is achievable even if you don’t have great carpentry skills. There are standard DIY tactics you can follow to achieve this task.

  7. Plantation-Style Shutters

With bathroom window shutters, you can close the shutters entirely for total privacy or close them partially to dim the light while soaking in your bathtub. During the day, the slats can be tilted to let in the amount of light that you need. These shutters add a nice touch to any bathroom.

  8. Carve Out a Wall Niche

Wall niches are a unique way of creating more space in your bathroom. They provide an ideal place to store your bathroom items. This type of bathroom design can be custom-fit to any space, from the most cramped bathroom to a roomier one.

  9. Bathroom Tile Backsplash

Your shower is the perfect place for patterned tile. The backsplash can help create a spa-like environment in your bathroom.  You don’t have to have marble or an all-white color palette to make it feel luxurious. The tile backsplash is just enough to add a high-end look.

  10. Buy Used

You can also save money on fixtures, toilets, and showers if you purchase them used. Search online sites like eBay and Craigslist or check your nearest Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They specifically sell home necessities such as doors, mirrors, sinks, toilets, and tubs.

  11. Use “Faux” Materials

Inexpensive alternatives often can look like the real thing. Instead of real wood plank flooring, try luxury vinyl flooring. High-definition laminate countertops and quartz countertops now compete with granite for the look of authentic natural stone. Faux-stone ceramic and porcelain tile backsplashes can mimic the look of travertine and marble.
